How Andy and Erin Got Here
We’ve known Andy for almost five years now. He’s one of our closest friends here in Austin. The first time we met Erin, Andy had planned a double date for Adam’s birthday. Erin had never met him before, but she showed up with his favorite cake that she baked from scratch. That’s just how she shows up for people.
From the moment we met Erin, it felt like we were meeting his future wife. There was a sense of ease between them right away. The way they share a similar humor, the way they make each other laugh, the excitement behind his eyes when she’s near. It all kept reinforcing what we felt from the beginning.
Why the Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk Is the Best Proposal Location in Austin, Texas
For Andy, choosing the Lady Bird Lake boardwalk wasn’t about finding a “good” location. It was about returning to a place that already meant something. The exact stretch of the boardwalk, right in front of Cidercade Austin, is where they had their first kiss. That alone made it the right place to propose.
Whether it’s a personal connection or a gorgeous spot that draws you to this area, in our experience Lady Bird Lake is one of the best locations to propose in Austin. There are beautiful city views all around, and it’s a great spot to take a few extra portraits after the proposal.
A few of our favorite highlights of the area:
Open views of the water with the Austin skyline just beyond.
Light that reflects off both the water and buildings, especially at golden hour.
Walkable access from nearby spots like Cidercade, making it easy to build a natural transition into the proposal, especially when planning a surprise.
Enough space along the boardwalk to find a private area. You can really have a casual approach that allows for privacy and an intimate moment.
Lady Bird Lake is a location that really lets you enjoy your moment together. It doesn’t require a lot to make it work, which is what makes it one of our favorite options for proposals in Austin!
The Proposal on the Boardwalk
The cover story was a double date with us at Cidercade Austin. At one point, we stepped out onto the patio, and Andy said, “Do y’all want to see where we had our first kiss?”
From there, we walked over to the boardwalk. By the time we reached the spot, the sun was hitting the skyline and reflecting across the water behind them, just like we had planned for. Andy turned toward Erin, got down on one knee, and proposed right where their story had started.

How We Planned the Proposal
Planning a surprise proposal like this comes with a lot of small decisions that most people haven’t had to think through before. That’s where we stepped in with Andy ahead of time to help with planning and logistics to make sure everything went smoothly.
Earlier that week, we met up with him and walked the boardwalk at the exact same time of day the proposal would happen. We paid close attention to the light we’d have, even how the sun reflected off the buildings and the water, and how we could line up the light so that it would fall across Erin’s emotional expression.
We talked through the exact area where their first kiss happened, then refined the spot within that section so everything lined up visually. From there, we guided Andy on where to stand, which direction to face, and how to naturally bring Erin into position without it feeling too obvious. We also gave him a specific time to start walking from Cidercade Austin so they would arrive right when the light was at its best.
A big part of what we do is helping fill in the gaps that most people wouldn’t know to think about. Not to over-direct the moment, but to make sure everything is set up in a way that allows it to unfold without distraction. That level of preparation is what gives our couples the ability to be fully present when it actually happens and enjoy every moment of the proposal.

After the Proposal
That night, both of their families came together for dinner at Ling Wu Asian Restaurant. Andy’s parents had come into town that week to meet Erin’s mom, so it was the first time everyone was sitting down together.
There was also one detail Andy had been holding onto for a long time. He had never had a drink before. He always said he wanted to wait and share his first one with his fiancée.
After dinner, we all went back to Erin’s place, and we surprised them with a small engagement gift. Tequila, cocktail glasses, and everything they’d need for Andy’s first margarita. Erin used to bartend, so she made margaritas for everyone. It was a simple and intentional way to celebrate, surrounded by the people closest to them, and we were so glad to be a part of it and help make it special.

Kind Words from Andy + Erin
“The absolute BEST photographers, communicators, and incredibly intentional! They are not only so easy to work with but went above and beyond in the planning and in the process. Their communication and ease and thoughtfulness were so helpful and made the entire engagement process better. They also executed my vision but also filled in the gaps where they knew I needed to fix some things. The process is already so intense and they make it so much easier so if you want someone to make it clear and smooth, The Shens are your photographers!”
